Transformation Story: Elderly Cat Sheds Pounds and Regains Health Post-Rescue

14 Year Old Cat Weighed Same as 4 Month Old Kitten, But A Few Months After the Rescue...

At just 14 years old, Raggedy Ann was as light as a 4-month-old kitten, defying all odds and surprising everyone with her resilience.

Raggedy Ann arrived at Saving One Life in Chandler, Arizona weighing a mere 3 pounds and 15 ounces, looking like a skeleton covered in fur. The elderly calico, estimated to be around 14 years old, was rescued from a hoarding situation in a cramped mobile home where she shared space with 40 other felines and 2 dogs. The local Humane Society staff feared that Ann’s frail body wouldn’t hold on much longer.

A desperate plea for help was posted by the Humane Society, and it caught the attention of Saving One Life, who immediately knew they had to step in and assist. Brianne Youngberg, a fosterer at Saving One Life, mentioned that when she and the director saw the heartbreaking photo of Ann, they knew they had to help. Despite being warned that Ann would likely need hospice care due to her condition, they were determined to provide her with the love and care she deserved.

Every day in her temporary foster home, she continues to gain weight. According to Brianne from Saving Raggedy Ann- A Foster Story, on her first night there, Ann slept so deeply that they thought she had passed away at one point. However, Ann showed her resilience and kept on fighting. Brianne mentioned that they monitor Ann’s weight regularly, and she consistently gains a few ounces each day.

Brianne introduced Raggedy Ann to a mixture of kitten wet food and warm water, making it easier for her body to digest. Despite being severely malnourished, Ann showed a strong appetite and began eating well. Due to her muscle loss, she struggled to lift her head or stand, so a warm, heated bed and a cuddly toy were set up to provide comfort. With everything she needed close by, Ann could focus on resting and recovering.

Brianne shared that she had to give Ann subcutaneous fluids every day for the first two weeks to make sure she stayed hydrated. Thanks to the love and care she received, Ann started gaining weight and getting back the strength in her legs, and her unique personality began to emerge.

Brianne shared with Love Meow how amazed she and her husband are by Raggedy Ann’s remarkable improvement every day. Now, Raggedy Ann is actively socializing with their cats and other foster animals, enjoying her time climbing cat trees and playing with toys. They find themselves admiring her transformation into a true feline on a daily basis.

In the heartwarming tale of Saving Raggedy Ann, despite her difficult history, Ann is a sweetheart who spreads love wherever she goes. Known for her affectionate nature, she adores being around people.

According to Brianne, Ann is a curious cat who enjoys exploring her surroundings and taking in the sights and sounds around her. Her favorite activities include climbing up cat trees, watching birds through the windows, and observing her human friends with genuine interest.

In a span of just four months, Ann has managed to increase her weight threefold, going from less than 4 pounds to now exceeding 10 pounds. Her incredible strength and unwavering determination to survive are truly remarkable and serve as a source of inspiration for all those around her.

“This little darling defied all odds and showed us what she’s made of. When I first welcomed her into my home, I thought it would be for end-of-life care due to her condition. But Ann never lost hope, and that motivated us to never give up on her.”

“Meeting Ann has reignited my passion for fostering, just when I was feeling discouraged and losing faith in people. She has reminded me to keep pushing forward and that every life holds value. Ann’s overflowing love is waiting to bless a loving family of her own.”
